Fly-Free Flock: Planting Tips for Summer Fly Prevention in Your Chicken's Yard

As summer arrives, so do the flies, buzzing nuisances that can make life unpleasant for both you and your chickens. Fortunately, nature offers solutions in the form of insect-repelling plants that not only beautify your chicken yard but also help keep fly populations in check.

Here are some plant suggestions to help you cultivate a fly-free environment for your flock:

Marigolds: These cheerful flowers not only add vibrant color to your yard but also emit a scent that repels flies. Plant marigolds around the perimeter of your coop and in other areas where flies tend to gather to help deter them from invading your chicken space.

Lavender: Known for its calming aroma and beautiful purple blooms, lavender is also a natural fly repellent. Plant lavender near your coop or in pots around your yard to help keep flies at bay while adding a lovely fragrance to the air.

Mint: Mint is another aromatic herb that flies dislike. Plant mint in containers or in a designated area of your yard to discourage flies from congregating. Bonus: you can also use fresh mint to make refreshing herbal teas or flavor chicken dishes!

Basil: Not only does basil add delicious flavor to your cooking, but it also acts as a natural insect repellent. Plant basil near your coop or in raised beds throughout your yard to help deter flies and other pests.

Rosemary: This fragrant herb is not only a culinary favorite but also a powerful insect deterrent. Plant rosemary bushes near your coop or along walkways to help keep flies away while enjoying its fresh scent and flavor.

By incorporating these insect-repelling plants into your chicken yard, you can create a more pleasant environment for both you and your flock. Not only will your yard look beautiful and smell delightful, but you'll also enjoy the added benefit of fewer flies buzzing around your coop. With a little green thumb and some strategic planting, you can cultivate a fly-free haven for your feathered friends to enjoy all summer long.
